We partnered with a coal power station to use a drone to safely and effectively enter the filtration system while offline. We provided engineers with a critical perspective of the structural supports of the facility, as well as data for conditional assessment of the flue-gas desulfurization components inside of the power plant.
We used the Flyability Elios 2 which is a collision-tolerant drone outfitted with a 4K video camera, 12MP still camera, and an IR camera. The drone was used to systematically navigate through the various areas of the inspection to gather high-definition imagery in a fraction of the time than if inspected via traditional methods.
In addition, welding and other repair work would not have been able to continue during the inspection if scaffolding was needed. Using a UAS allowed the welding and repair operations to be completed during the inspection, without interference. We also showcased our potential ability to deploy the drone inside the wet scrubber environment while the plant is still online.
